IFRA characterization data

Four data sets have been registered by IFRA. However, only IFRA 26 and IFRA 30 are currently recommended by IFRA, the other two relating to an older version of the ISO 12647-3 printing standard.

IFRA 26 and IFRA 30 are for printing processes that conform to ISO/DIS 12647-3:2004 (newspaper printing) for a screen frequency of 40 lines/cm. These are for processes with a tone value increase of 26 and 30% respectively, regardless of how the plates are produced.

IFRA28 is for printing processes that conform to ISO 12647-3:1998 (newspaper printing) for a screen frequency of 40 lines/cm, printing from negative acting plates. It is for processes with a tone value increase of 28%. IFRA22 was intended for printing processes that conform to a proposed revision of ISO 12647-3 for a screen frequency of 40 lines/cm, printing from plates made by computer-to-plate. It is for processes with a tone value increase of 22%. However, that process was never formally adopted.

Note the IFRA printing conditions have two data sets for each. The one labelled S is the data for the ISO12642:1996 target (also known as "IT8.7/3"). The other (labelled L) is for an extension of this target that contains all of these patches, plus 557 additional patches, that conforms to the German standard DIN 16614, contains 1485 patches, and is also known as "ECI 2002 target".

More information about the printing conditions can be obtained by clicking on the reference names below. For all the IFRA characterization data sets, the characterisation data may be obtained as a text file by clicking on the appropriate file name within the description. In many cases links are also given to example profiles. These are for convenience only and do not represent any endorsement by ICC.
