Danny Rich Memorial Scholarship Fund

The International Color Consortium has established a scholarship fund in memory of Dr. Danny Rich, who passed away in 2022 and was an active member of ICC.

ICC invites proposals from those working in a topic related to colour management who need funding for their research. A list of topics of interest to ICC can be found in the ICC Research Portal. The 2026 closing date for applications was 15 May 2026.

A maximum of $10,000 is awarded each year. ICC especially encourages applications for the cost of publishing at conferences such as CIC. Funds can also be used for subsistence, travel, or purchase of items necessary for the work such as research equipment, software licenses or publications.

Conditions:

• The work will contribute to the goals of the ICC
• The applicant is currently registered as a student at a recognized university
• The work is original and capable of leading to publication in a conference, journal or on the ICC web site
• The work is not funded from another source and requires ICC funding to be undertaken or completed
• All outputs are made publicly available without IP restrictions
• The amount applied for represents good value for the proposed research outputs
• The successful candidate(s) attend an ICC meeting to present their work after its completion (remotely or in person). [Details of ICC meetings are here]

Proposals should include the following:

1. An abstract summarising the research
2. Details of where the applicant is registered as a student
3. A statement of the research question and how the research will benefit colour management users
4. A list of other contributors to the work, including supervisors
5. A proposed budget identifying the amount applied for and details of each cost item.

In the case of proposals for funding conference papers, the submitted abstract or final manuscript should be included.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to make a short presentation on the proposed research to a panel of ICC members, who will make recommendations to the ICC steering committee for a final decision in June. Proposals will be judged on their quality and the degree to which they meet the award conditions above, together with the funds available and the particular priorities of the ICC at the time. Details of awards will be announced on the ICC web site and ICC will also normally publish, or provide a link to, outputs of the research on the ICC web site.

The 2026 went to Alireza Rabbanifar at Munsell Color Science Laboratory at Rochester Institute of Technology, for her project on perceptual tone mapping of chromatic highlights above diffuse white in HDR images

The 2024 award went to Camilla Simoncelli of University of Nevada, Reno, for a project on individual differences in colour appearance.

The 2023 award went to You-Sheng Zhang of National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, for the project "Comparing colour perception on LCDs with different backlight technologies - A study on observer metamerism".

Both Simoncelli and Zhang presented recent work at the ICC Expert Day on Spectral Imaging on September 9, 2024
