Resources: R8 13: Tc8 16 Test
A CIE Technical Committee TC8-16 on Consistency of Colour Appearance within a Single Reproduction Medium, studied this topic and produced a CIE Report which will be available here. This work followed a small-scale investigation (Reportership R8-13), the result of which is available here.
The terms of reference of this committee were:
- To study and report on sets of reproductions of the same source image that have a consistent colour appearance and are most similar to a reference reproduction, including recommending assessment methods that measure the similarity of reproductions of an image with different colour gamuts, for printed images on substrates with approximately similar characteristics in a fixed viewing environment. Only the effect of colour reproduction on appearance will be considered by this TC and so the assessment will be performed using hard copy or soft copy proofing.
- To propose a metric which can measure consistency of colour appearance.
Records of meetings of the TC and associated resources are here.
Research groups from Europe, USA and Japan conducted a range of experiments in this area. Significant progress in understanding this topic has been made, however no metric for consistent colour appearance has yet been identified and further work is recommended. Detailed descriptions of the methods and results from this research are being made available by the ICC to assist future research work on this topic.
